I'm not sure what it is. I haven't encountered it before. I listen to audiobooks on my iPod all the time while I'm driving. However, if someone else is in the car, I usually like to switch over to random music. So, I can just go hit the main menu shuffle thing to play music, but when I'm back to being alone in the car, I can go back to my audiobook without quite as many changes.

However, it's still rather lame. It will come as no surprise to anybody who read the Security Update thread, that I am somewhat disappointed by the need to restart my computer after installing this update.

I didn't have to. It didn't ask. Okay, it looks like a restart is only required for Stupid work machine! Apple introduces update to an existing device.

People bitch that Apple forces people to buy new devices instead of offering added functionality for old ones. People congratulate Apple for finally realizing they make a lot from new versions of the device and releasing updated functionality for old devices. People bitch that the new functionality sucks.

I downloaded the update, plugged in my 40GB 4thGen. Still waiting for proper respect for iTunes playlist settings on the iPod. I sent feedback to Apple In case you are wondering what I am talking about: in iTunes, you can set shuffle, repeat, and browsing on a per-playlist basis still missing is the ability to set some playlists to shuffle by album and others to shuffle by song.

I wish the iPod would respect these settings perhaps give the option not to in the iPod settings. I have some playlists that I want to hear shuffled, some that I do not, some that I want shuffled by album, and some that are really large e. Basically, I would like to see the iPod follow whatever your iTunes settings are for the playlists on the iPod If you agree, feel free to send feedback to Apple. Update went well, Shuffle on by default.

System called for a restart in 5 languages - I curse in 6. And all my bookmarkables were in order in various playlists, but the Audio Book automagic list has them in some random order that I'm trying to figure out. I'm really happy about the shuffle addition. Having the ability to throw things into shuffle instead of digging into the preferences to change it up makes me a very happy sudo-1G iPod owner.

To shuffle up again the next day just toggle the shuffle option again and ta-da, freshly shuffled playlist. I have done this for a year now. It takes a couple of seconds each morning but once you get into the habit of doing it life is good. I agree that this option should be on the iPod somehow. Somehting like holding down the play button when you select a playlist to shuffle it up would work. To do the same thing all the time I merely press the play button from the Main Menu.

The Shuffle mode must be selected in Settings for this to work. This also works with playlist shuffling. No need for setting up a pre-randomized order like mike k.
